How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Maintaining a bright, healthy-looking smile isn’t necessarily easy; but it’s well worth the effort. Having discoloured teeth can have a considerable impact on your confidence levels, as any unsightly stains or yellowing can lead to the impression you don’t take much interest in your personal appearance or hygiene. This is not always the case and our teeth can naturally become discoloured over time; however, the effectiveness of teeth whitening treatments available today mean it’s easier than ever to keep our smiles looking healthy and bright.

Our teeth can become discoloured due to our lifestyles and habits, as well as factors beyond our control. Age, genetics, health conditions and dental trauma can all cause discolouration, and these are things we cannot control. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, as well as drinking or eating certain foods, can also contribute to this.

Private dental surgeries offer a range of teeth whitening procedures and products specially formulated to provide professional results. At Ringway Dental, we offer a variety of options designed to suit everyone, starting from just £250.00.

In this guide, we’ll explain more about the science behind how teeth whitening works so you can figure out which treatment is best for you.

In-Surgery Teeth Whitening

Our in-surgery teeth whitening treatment is called Zoom. Pioneered by renowned dental and healthcare specialists, Philips, our Zoom technology offers an indulgent whitening experience within the comfort of our luxurious Cheadle surgery.

Before this 60-minute procedure, our cosmetic dentists will carefully apply the Zoom gel to your teeth. This is a hydrogen peroxide-based formula that targets and breaks down discoloured molecules. The special Zoom light system is used to accelerate the process, leading to a much more efficient way to whiten teeth.

Combining innovations in science and dental technology, the Zoom in-surgery whitening procedure is one of the most effective ways to achieve a brighter smile. Here’s how it works:

  • The blue LED light activates the hydrogen peroxide ingredient, enabling the brightening molecules to penetrate the surface layers of the teeth via oxidation.
  • During this process, the hydrogen peroxide in the gel is activated to release oxygen molecules as it comes into contact with discoloured areas of the teeth.
  • This added oxygen allows the bleaching agent to disintegrate chromogens, the pigmented compounds responsible for stained and discoloured teeth.
  • To maximise the effect of the bleaching ingredients, your dentist will re-apply the whitening gel to your teeth every 15 minutes during this treatment.

Providing results that can brighten your smile by up to eight shades, our in-surgery teeth whitening procedure is the fastest way to achieve an uplifting boost in confidence!

At-Home Teeth Whitening

Our Boutique treatment is the most affordable option for those seeking a convenient yet impactful teeth whitening experience. Priced at just £250, our at-home treatment includes custom-made trays that you’ll wear over your teeth in combination with specially formulated professional whitening gels. There are two types of active ingredients that can be included in these gels: hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

These gels have a slightly lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide than the ones we use in-surgery, as they’re designed to be used at home for an extended period of time. This is why carbamide peroxide may be used instead, as it takes longer to break down than hydrogen peroxide. This all depends on whether you will wear your trays for longer at night, or for shorter bursts in the daytime. Your whitening treatment plan will be discussed and adapted to your needs, so you maintain full control over the procedure.

Here’s how our Boutique at-home treatment works.

  • Scans are taken of your teeth during your consultation at the surgery, so we can have custom-made trays developed for you to wear at home.
  • When you pick up the trays, we will provide you with the specific whitening gels required as part of your tailored whitening treatment plan with us. We will show you how to use the trays and gels for maximum impact at home.
  • Like with in-surgery whitening, the Boutique treatment also uses the process of oxidation. When worn over a pre-determined period of days or weeks, the gels work to break down the molecules that cause discoloured or stained teeth.
  • It might take up to two weeks for you to achieve the desired results at home, though this depends on how well you stick to your whitening regime, as well as the concentration of peroxides used.

Our Boutique at-home tooth whitening treatment can be equally as effective as our in-surgery options. They work using the same scientific principles to combat the specific molecules that cause tooth discolouration. While the at-home treatment takes longer, it is more affordable and may also be more convenient.

Combining at-Home and in Surgery Whitening

Our most impactful whitening treatment offers a balanced combination of at-home and in-surgery sessions. The Enlighten process involves a 14-day at-home approach, topped off with a final in-surgery treatment designed to intensify the results. The Enlighten procedure costs £550 and includes your own custom-made trays, developed using leading technology at the Enlighten lab. Again, the same principle of oxidation is used here to accelerate the disintegration of those discolouration-causing molecules on the surface layers of the teeth.

The Enlighten treatment gives you the best of both worlds, with a lengthier treatment time that offers lasting results when combined with our in-surgery whitening procedure.
