How much do dental implants cost?

Let’s talk dental implants — and what they actually cost. It’s a big step. But it’s easier to plan for when you know the numbers.

Dental implants are one of the best ways to replace missing teeth. They look and feel natural. And they can last for years. But many people worry about the price tag.

So, how much do dental implants actually cost? And are they worth it?

Wondering if they’re right for you? We’ll help you figure that out. And if implants aren’t the perfect fit, don’t worry—there are other options worth knowing about.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. The implant tooth root is a small titanium screw that’s set into the jawbone. A false tooth is then attached. This looks like a natural tooth and is customised. You can have one implant or several. You could even have a whole set implanted.

The process of getting a dental implant looks like this:

  1. Initial consultation. Here, you’ll have scans and discuss the dental implant cost.
  2. Surgical placement of the implant. The titanium screw will be inserted into the jawbone.
  3. Healing period. After insertion, you’ll need to wait a while for the implant to bond with your bone. This is called “osseointegration.”
  4. Tooth placement. Finally, the tooth part of the dental implant is fitted on top of the screw.

When the implant process is complete, the new tooth looks and feels like a natural tooth. And it works like one too.

How much does a dental implant cost?

Implants start from around £2,500 per tooth. The average cost is around £3,100 per tooth. The price you’ll pay depends on a few things:

  • How many implants are needed. One tooth? A few? A full set?
  • How tricky your case is. Do you need extra correction work first?
  • The type of replacement chosen.
  • The dentist’s experience and the quality of materials used.

If you’re thinking about replacing lots of teeth this way, options like all-on-4 or all-on-6 can be more affordable per tooth. But they do have a higher upfront cost.

All-on-4 and All-on-6

These are dental implants that use techniques to replace an arch of missing teeth. As the name suggests, they use either four or six implants placed strategically. This is instead of the traditional dental implant that has one implant per tooth. It means a full set of secure teeth with fewer implants into the jaw. The surgery is less extensive and the recovery time is less.

Whichever option you choose, remember that dental implants are a long-term investment. They are built to last and require very little upkeep.

To make things easier, you can also spread the cost with a finance plan and pay monthly.

Is it worth getting dental implants?

Here are the benefits of dental implants and why you might consider them a great long-term investment:

  • They help to maintain jawbone strength. When you have teeth missing, the jawbone can shrink. Implants counteract this.
  • They support the teeth either side.
  • They look natural.
  • They fit securely. They won’t slip or click like dentures.
  • You can eat your favourite foods. And speak clearly with them. Just as though they were real.
  • They can last 10 to 20 years. Or longer with good care.
  • They’re comfortable.
  • There’s no removal or soaking involved, like with dentures.

Are there alternatives worth considering?

Dental implants are one way of replacing missing teeth. Other options might be more suitable, depending on your situation and budget:

  • Dental bridges. These are a popular choice among people with healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Dental bridges are quicker to fit. Typically, less expensive too. Sometimes they do require the neighbouring teeth to be altered or reshaped to fit them. Read more about dental implants vs dental bridges here.
  • Dentures. These are the most cost-effective option. Especially for people missing several teeth. Dentures can be removed easily. And replaced. They are less secure and comfortable though. Your speech and eating may also be affected.

Implants do cost more upfront, but they tend to give better long-term value, and they feel more natural.

Your dentist will help you to decide what’s best. They’ll look at:

  • Your overall oral health.
  • Your budget.
  • Your lifestyle and what feels right for you.
