Is a Dental Implant Right for Me?

For many of us, the main worry we have when we lose any teeth is the cosmetic impact. Any gaps in our smiles can reduce our confidence, restricting the way we engage with others and causing discomfort with the way we look.

Replacing any missing tooth is important – and not just because of the cosmetic concerns they lead to. Leaving gaps in your teeth can cause a range of other unexpected dental problems, which can quickly become more expensive and painful to fix. Luckily, there are a few options to choose from if you need teeth replacing. These procedures can improve both your cosmetic and dental health concerns.

One treatment for missing teeth is a dental implant – also known as a tooth implant. As our dental implants team know just how difficult it can be to decide which tooth replacement procedure to choose, we’ve put together a guide to dental implants. Read on to find out if a tooth implant is right for you.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant restores the appearance and function of the teeth by replacing any missing teeth – or being fitted after a tooth extraction procedure.

With dental implants, we attach a bespoke porcelain crown to a titanium metal screw that has been implanted into the mouth where the previous tooth was.

Once you’ve had the tooth implant procedure done, you will need a couple more appointments before we can fit the final porcelain crown on to the implant. This is so we can check your implant is settling healthily.

These appointments might span over the course of a couple of months, as we need to check that your jawbone and implant have fused together properly before attaching the porcelain crown. Once we confirm the implant is ready, we will attach the crown, restoring your smile with a strong porcelain crown that looks entirely natural.

The cost of dental implants in Manchester begins at £2,200 per tooth.

Who Might Need a Tooth Implant?

Anyone missing a tooth (or teeth), or anyone that knows they need teeth extracting, may be advised to have a dental implant. This is because having a missing tooth can have implications in relation to your oral health, hygiene, and even managing to do everyday tasks such as eat meals.

Is a Dental Implant the Right Choice for Me?

Dental implants will work for most people, though there are some situations where other procedures may be more beneficial. If you have a dental implant consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and ask you about any underlying health conditions you have. This helps us identify whether a dental implant is the right choice for you – or if a different tooth replacement treatment would be best.

A dentist may decide that a dental implant would not be a suitable option for you for a couple of reasons. Dental implants do require quite a bit of healing, as your gums and bone need to heal to fuse with the implant properly after the treatment. A dental implant is a surgical procedure, so it’s important you discuss any of these concerns with your dentist before you can both make an informed decision about whether to go ahead with treatment.

  • Diabetes – People with uncontrolled diabetes are not suitable for dental implants, due to the increased length of time it takes for wounds to heal. The longer it takes for your dental implant procedure to heal up, the more susceptible you become to infection.
  • Medications – those taking medications such as bisphosphonates for cancer treatment might be advised to opt for a different dental procedure instead. This is because this form of medication can reduce how well our bodies heal our bones. Another situation is where you may have had radiotherapy treatment in specific areas including around the area where your dental implant would go – similarly, this is because radiotherapy can have an impact on our ability to heal bones sufficiently.
  • Gum Disease – Those with gum disease may be advised to look alternatives to dental implants. These conditions leave us prone to bone loss in the jaw, as well as weakened bones and gums that simply aren’t strong enough to support the dental implants. We would always recommend you have symptoms of gum disease – as well as the root cause – addressed and treated before undergoing any dental procedure.
  • Smoking & Drug Use – Smoking and drug use can increase the risk of implant failure. This is because smoking reduces your ability to heal after a dental implant, as any nicotine from cigarettes (even e-cigarettes) limits the blood flow to the gums. This also limits your immune system, and so the increased healing times will also increase the risk of infection after a dental implant.
  • Lack of supporting bone – Before fitting a dental implant, we need to check you have enough bone there to support the implant in the first place. In some cases, we may first recommend that you have a bone graft or a sinus lift first. It might also be difficult in some areas of the mouth to have a dental implant fitted, particularly towards the very back of the mouth.

As always, each of these cases are considered on an individual basis during your appointment. If you are told you cannot have a dental implant, or that you may benefit more from a different procedure, your dentist will discuss the more suitable alternatives with you during your consultation.

Different Types of Dental Implants

Each type of dental implant will take a few appointments, spanning over the course of a few months. First, we’ll take a CT scan of the area to identify whether there may be any issues regarding your treatment – such as ensuring there’s enough supporting bone there.

We will then book you in for your implant placement appointment, after which you’ll then need to wait a couple of months so your jawbone can fuse together with the implants. We know waiting can be a tedious process, so we can offer you temporary dentures to wear throughout this time.

There are a few different types of dental implants we offer here at Ringway Dental:

Single Tooth Dental Implants Manchester

We know just how much even one single missing tooth can impact your confidence and eating habits. This is why we offer single tooth dental implant procedures, alongside our multiple dental implant treatments. Even having this solo tooth replaced can drastically improve your day-to-day experience, while maintaining the health and hygiene of your teeth. Pricing for a single dental implant and crown starts at £2200.00.

Implant Retained Dentures

Implant retained dentures use implant technology to fix your implants to your jaw. They are similar to dentures, though they use removable implants rather than adhesives to remain in place. These types of dentures are more beneficial to many with missing teeth, since they can effortlessly be removed for effective cleaning – also helping them last longer. They also feel secure, while remaining comfortable as you go about your daily routine. The price of implant retained dentures begins at £6000.00.

All-on 4 & All-on 6 Dental Implants Manchester

At Ringway Dental, we are dedicated to offering the most convenient treatments available in dental technology for our patients. We can fit up to 4 – 6 dental implants at one time with our all-on 4 or all-on 6 procedures, usually used where you require an entire arch (or arches) of teeth replacing. After your initial CT scan appointment, we will book you in at a suitable time for you to have this efficient, confidence-boosting treatment done.

This is a bigger procedure to have done in comparison to just a single tooth dental implant, as you’ll be replacing multiple teeth at a time. However, the impact can be highly impressive – and you’ll leave our dental surgery with a full arch of brand new implants.

All-on 4 dental implants begin at £8000.00.

What are the Alternatives to Dental Implants?

Dental implants aren’t suitable for everybody. An effective alternative to dental implants is to have a dental bridge instead. Our team regularly work on dental bridges in Manchester, with years of experience in restoring our patients’ smiles.

Dental bridges are made from porcelain, specially designed and fitted to replace missing teeth without involving overly invasive procedures. Dental bridges involve moulding bespoke porcelain teeth to fit over the remaining teeth in the surrounding area. This offers a natural look, filling in gaps so you can continue to maintain good oral health.

Dental bridges are priced starting at £1,200, but you don’t have to pay the total price all at once. We offer our 0% interest financing option, giving patients more time to pay for their treatments – as well as peace of mind.
